Professional preventive oral care play a major role in supporting your own efforts to keep your teeth and gums healthy, mainly in younger ages, where future oral problems can be avoided.

The importance of preventive the dental care is underlined by the type of conditions it can solve before they happen. Some of the most common issues include:

  • Tooth decay.

  • Erosion of tooth enamel.

  • Gum disease.

The mouth is a fertile and warm ground for bacteria, therefore, your oral health and general well being are linked, and preventing dental problems will help to keep the rest of your body in good condition as well.

Why preventive oral health care is important
Access to preventive oral health care is particularly important for (mainly) two reasons.
  1. Many dental conditions are quite preventable with early treatment. For instance, dental sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in children.

  2. Preventive dental care habits-- including early and routine treatment with your dentist, combined with consistent home care (brushing and flossing)-- can save you money and oral setbacks in the long-run. Studies have shown that for every dollar spent on preventive dental care - $8 to $50 can be saved in restorative and emergency treatments – and potentially more in additional types of medical treatment. Some steps to follow are:

  • Preventive Dental Care at Home

Regular brushing and flossing at least twice a day and replacing your toothbrush at least twice a year.

  • Fluoride Treatments and Dental Sealants

Fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay, so use a fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse at home

and get a fluoride treatment from your dentist.

  • Dental Exams and Cleanings

Dental radiographs (x-rays) are a critical component of preventive, proactive care in order to find problems

invisible to the naked eye, as early as possible, before they become big problems.

  • A Balanced Diet

A healthy, balanced diet is essential to not only oral health, but your health overall. Avoid foods and drinks

with excessive sugars that feed the bacteria that produce dental plaque, and include calcium-rich items to

decrease your chances of developing gum disease and jaw deterioration.

  • Dentist Visits

Visit your dentist twice a year for to check for any problems in the teeth or gums and to get a thorough

cleaning. Since most dental conditions are painless at first, you may not be aware of dental problems until they

cause significant damage if you don’t regularly see your dentist.
